Apache Point Observatory (APO), which is normally closed to the public, will be hosting an Open House on March 7th, 2020. It will be a free event, open to everyone, and will include daytime tours of APO, science activities and demonstrations, and nighttime eyepiece viewing through the large 3.5-m telescope!
Daytime tours will last from 2-5 PM, and will include tours of the 2.5-m and 3.5-m telescope, as well as viewing of the Sun through smaller solar telescopes, and family-friendly hands-on activities.
From 5 PM-Midnight, the Sunspot Visitors Center will be hosting family-friendly hands-on demonstrations, activities, and telescope viewings with graduate students from the NMSU Astronomy Department.
3.5-m telescope eyepiece viewings, which will take place from 6-11 PM, will require advance reservation by phone – call the observatory to reserve a spot at 575-437-6822. If you are attending the 3.5-m telescope viewing, be prepared for freezing temperatures and for climbing 3 stories of stairs at altitude. Children under the age of 10 are also not allowed, for safety reasons.
